Okay, look at it this way: If the elk/deer/stag decides that he/she/grelm is more comfortable in a standard elk/deer/stag position and put his/her/grilm head down, that first lantern is going to burn like Hell™.
I assume that the woman isn't holding on to the horns for her safety, but rather for the animal's well being.
It all depends on who put that lantern there. Did the woman put the lantern there? Or did she come upon this situation and decided to help out? This is either a depiction of a beautiful commingling of species, or horrible cruelty and torture to animals.
